Description

Engineered for the highly controlled extraction of permanent maxillary molars with severely decayed, broken-down, or fractured crowns, the premium Fig. 89 and Fig. 90 Cowhorn Forceps are specialized instruments for complex exodontia. Named for their distinctively curved, horn-shaped working tips, these forceps are specifically designed to tackle the unique three-root anatomy of upper molars (two buccal roots and one large palatal root). When a tooth has lost its structural crown integrity, standard forceps cannot gain a secure hold; cowhorn forceps overcome this by sliding deep into the root bifurcations to elevate the tooth using concentrated vertical leverage.

The set is supplied as a complementary 2-piece anatomical kit to provide precise mirror-image coverage for opposite sides of the upper jaw:

  • Fig. 89 (Upper Right Molar): Geometrically configured so the pointed cowhorn beak engages the buccal bifurcation on the patient’s upper right side, while the broad concave beak cradles the palatal root.

  • Fig. 90 (Upper Left Molar): Reversed geometry designed to perfectly fit the buccal and palatal root configurations of the patient’s upper left quadrant.

The defining highlight of this set is the deeply hooked, pointed beak architecture. Rather than clamping the outside of the tooth crown, the sharp, tapered cowhorn beak is designed to slice through the periodontal ligament and seat directly into the structural split between the two buccal roots. As the clinician squeezes the handles, the wedge action of the beak forces itself into the bifurcation, driving the roots upward out of the alveolar socket. This mechanical advantage allows for clean, predictable extractions that protect the surrounding buccal bone plate from fracture.

Key Features & Technical Specifications

  • 2-Piece Left/Right Anatomy Kit: Includes Fig. 89 for the upper right quadrant and Fig. 90 for the upper left quadrant, ensuring anatomically correct adaptation.
  • Pointed Cowhorn Bifurcation Beaks: Features highly tapered, pointed beaks that slip beneath damaged crowns to lock firmly into the buccal root bifurcation.
  • Wedge-Action Elevation: Engineered to utilize mechanical wedging forces that naturally lift the tooth from the socket, minimizing the reliance on aggressive physical pulling.
  • English-Pattern Curved Handles: Outfitted with wide, heavily knurled handles designed with an ergonomic curve to clear the patient’s lips and optimize palm leverage.
  • High-Purity Surgical Steel: Forged from premium medical-grade stainless steel to completely resist rust, structural pitting, and chemical staining from harsh disinfectants.
  • 100% Autoclavable: Fully engineered to repeatedly withstand high-temperature autoclave sterilization, thermal disinfection, and deep ultrasonic cleaning cycles.
